The new year is here and let’s face it, many of us have resolved to hit the gym and take off those extra pounds gained over the past year. While a good first step is to get a gym membership, don’t forget the most important part ― new shoes.
Why are getting new shoes important?
Well for starters take a look at your current pair of gym shoes. When did you purchase them? How often have you used them? According to MSU Extension, the typical athletic shoe is only made to last approximately 500 miles for people who walk and 350 to 500 miles for heavy runners. Most athletic shoes, used on a regular basis, need to be replaced every three to six months.
Depending upon how old your gym shoes are and how much you’ve used them, it may be a good step to head on over to your nearest shoe store and get a new pair of shoes. However, before you head off to the shoe store, you’ll need to know what type of shoes to buy.
What exercises are you planning to do at the gym? Hit the treadmill, do some strength training or take some classes? Whatever you’re planning to do, you’ll need shoes that work for your preferred type of exercise. Here are a few recommendations.
- If you want to focus on getting more steps into your day, you’ll want to get a pair of walking shoes.
- Want to start jogging or running? You’ll want to get a pair of running shoes.
- If you’re looking to start doing some strength training, CrossFit, Zumba or dancing, get a pair of training shoes.
